Test Valley - 29th March 2001

Due to the extremely wet weather over the past few weeks, the course at our original venue of Wokefield Park was unplayable. We re-arranged to play the quick-draining Test Valley and, as always at this venue, we were not disappointed. Our legendary rain-avoidance worked it's magic yet again and 11 of us thoroughly enjoyed the day. Even though it was the first golf in several months for many of us, the scoring was remarkably good - no doubt due in part to the tremendous condition of the course considering the amount of water that it had had to endure.

Royal Winchester - 25th April 2001

O.K. we finally paid the penalty for some of our past rain avoidance at Royal Winchester. The course was 'a bit wet', mainly due to the large downpour experienced the night before. Unfortunately, this led to a large number of temporary greens being necessary. Further rain throughout the day didn't help matters. Even so, several golfers managed to score extremely well over the day. Congratulations must go to Joe Griffiths who birdied every par 5 in the afternoon on the way to a trophy-winning 43 points.

Slinfold Park - 24th May 2001

Only 11 golfers turned out at this new venue for our society, but they were well rewarded for their efforts. A fantastic day weather-wise was complemented by a course in good condition that required plenty of thoughtful positional play. The hard, bouncy fairways and tricky greens caused problems for us all. Congratulations to our newest member, Chris Rogers, who played very well on an unfamiliar course for his winning 35 points.

The Army - 28th June 2001

For this year, the course at The Army had been set up for the Hampshire PGA Matchplay finals, which we followed around the course. This led to some 'interesting' pin placements, to say the least. Even so the scoring (for some at least) was quite respectable, and the excellent weather complimented the day perfectly. As always at this venue, a great day was finalised by a superb evening meal. Yours truly played much better in the afternoon than in the morning, and scooped the trophy with a haul of 40 points.

Bramley - 26th July 2001

Bramley played host to this year's society scratch championship, played for over 36 holes. The course was in excellent condition and was complimented weather-wise by one of the hottest days of the year. Congratulations go to Alan Harlow, who managed to hold off my rather unexpected challenge for the Championship by a single point. Congratulations must also go to Terry Berridge, our present captain, who came as close as anybody can remember to actually winning something with an afternoon round of 39 points. The day was rounded off by a superb carvery meal.

Stoneham - 23rd August 2001

Stoneham this year turned out to be the Alwyn Huggett show where, as you can see from the results below, our treasurer walked off with almost all of the prizes. On a very warm and muggy day the scoring was good, with a barage of birdies being recorded by several players. A special mention should go to Alan Harlow, who went round in the afternoon in only 73 shots gross (one over par), only to be denied the prize on the last green. The day was rounded off in superb style by a fabulous dinner.

Petersfield - 28th September 2001

Some early morning fog gave way to a wonderful day weather-wise, and some fantastic golf. Bill Peach played extremely well all day, and his tally of 41 points in the morning was enough to win the Wethered Cup by a single point. The 'fun' Ryder Cup style afternoon fourballs was won by the European team by a score of 3 matches to 1. As usual, the day was completed by an excellent meal in the clubhouse.

Puttenham - 18th October 2001

Considering the amount of rain that fell the night before we were due to play we can count ourselves extremely fortunate, because the weather on the day was brilliant and the course was in superb condition. Bill Peach again played very well, even after being cut three shots after last months efforts, and won the trophy with a score of 41 points. The afternoon bogey competition provided a little variation from our normal game, and Mat Demery was the only golfer to beat the course. In the closest battle for the Order of Merit we've ever had, yours truly just managed to pip Bill Peach for the title.
